Study Prognosis

What is a "study prognosis" (to be presented at the Foreigner's Office)?

When you have surpassed the normal study period by more than 3 semesters, then you need a letter from BTU Cottbus in order to extend your German student residency permit.
A study prognosis includes:

  • Proof that your study progress has been normal up to now
  • A founded estimate of how long it will be until your studies are completed
  • Statement on your prospect of successfully completing your degree

Based on your study prognosis, the Foreigner's Office will decide on whether and for how long to extend your residency permit.

Where and how do I get a study prognosis?

At BTU Cottbus, the International Office is in charge of issuing study prognoses.
Please visit Frau Kersten (Main Building, Room 4.33), the International Office staff member in charge of study prognoses, during her consultation hours.

Please bring the following documents with you:

  • Student identification card (BTU Chipcard)
  • Filled-out f Study Prognosis Form
  • Current Transcript of Records (Please make sure that all of your completed courses have been updated on your Transcript of Records by the Registrar!)

You can typically pick up your study prognosis at the International Office about a week after handing in your documents.
Please take this processing time at the International Office into account when planning for your appointment at the Foreigner's Office.
