Niederluausitz is situated in eastern Germany with its centre in Cottbus. The region is energy oriented and with Vattenvall Europe is the fifth largest European electricity producer. It is especially active in the areas of mining and generation.

Three important large scale power plants make it to the engine of electro-energy network. But not only power plants form the character of the region. Brown coal mining considerably influences the landscape. Mining landscapes have been re-cultivated and given a new utilization function. Recreation areas of high quality have been created in this way.
