Chair for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering / Geotechnical Engineering

The Chair for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering / Geotechnical Engineering represents this subject at the University of Cottbus in means of teaching and research. The chair was founded in 1992 after the Brandenburg University of Technology in Cottbus was reestablished. The students are led up to the tasks of civil engineering by an instruction close to state-of-the-art practice.

The Chair is equipped with an efficient laboratory for soil mechanical studies and soil investigations, as well as with the instruments for field measurements. Additionally, real scale tests are conducted in a sand-filled basin, which has a size of 7  x 4  x 4 m. The chair carries out initial suitability tests for anchors, test loadings on piles and tension tests on soil nails.

Field of activity:

  • on-site soil investigation
  • laboratory for soil mechanical studies
  • engineering geology
  • in-situ testing and measurement
  • field tests
  • tunneling and gallery construction
  • stability investigation and analysis
  • test loading of anchors, piles and soil nails
  • granular foam glass
  • clay brick gravel – rich recycling materials or road construction
  • application of geosynthetics
  • disposal and environment technology
  • barrage, dam and dyke construction
  • rockfall protection
  • expertise guidance and consulting
  • investigation in case of damage
