Interaction between Research Activities and Teaching Modules

The underlying principal idea guiding the development of the PE-master programme was to combine a large variety of research activities with future relevance and to focus their outcomes in a teaching programme of superior quality. On this platform the different fields of education in power engineering will be offered with an strong link to the respective research activity of the different departments which are organized in the Center for Energy Technology Brandenburg (CEBra –Research) at BTU Cottbus. This center has 3 main streams of research activities.

Research Division for Energy Resources
Mining and processing of energy resources is the first step in the energy value-added chain. The Research Division for Energy Resources at CEBra Research is focussing on alternative concepts for using renewable and waste materials. All processing steps from raw materials to energetic usable resources will be investigated scientifically. These research activities are concentrated on technical as well as on economical aspects for the production of biogenous energy resources.

The alley cropping systems for renewable biomass production developed at BTU is one of the most well known projects in this field of research and were used for the recultivation of post-mining landscapes. Furthermore a new technique for biogas production is in the focus of this division.

Research Division of Energy Conversion
The focus in this field of research is concentrated on the next step in the energy value-added chain. It will deal with high efficient pit coal fired combustion systems on the one hand side. On the other hand side renewable conversion systems in the field of photo-voltaic or solar thermal conversion will be investigated.

Especially pointed out should be the activities of this research division in field of zero-CO2 emission power plant on the basis of the oxyfuel process. Furthermore on main focus will be concentrated in the development of future drive systems as a combination of high efficient electrical machines and high end power electronic devices.

Research Division of Energy Supply
Increasing dispersed generation and liberalisation of electricity markets will lead to more increasing problems to ensure system stability in transmission and distribution networks. One main topic in this field of research will deal with the network integration of renewable energies to the local and national electricity grids.

That will cover basic research in network planning and protection as well as the implementation of virtual large power plants as a kind of grid substructure to absorb and balance renewable infeed before injecting the energy to the grid. Especially the field of virtual power plants will be investigated from the technical point of view as well as from the economical.
