Application Procedure
International students, not from cooperating partner universities, have to apply through uni-assist (see the address below). Uni-assist verifies the applications on their credentials – it does not grant admission. If the verification of uni-assist is successful the application is forwarded to BTU Cottbus where we evaluate the application once again with regards to the admission to our programme.
Please pay attention that uni-assist starts evaluating applications only after they receive their fees for it (more information on fees and methods of payment you can find on the web page of uni-assist: www.uni-assist.de)
International student coming from cooperating universities have to apply directly to BTU (see the address below).
General admission requirements for applicants to the Masters course “Power Engineering”:
- a complete application form
- a concise curriculum vitae with details about your educational history, practical experiences (if applicable), research interests, etc.
- higher education entrance qualification (e.g. Secondary School Leaving Certificate, High School Diploma, A-levels, Abitur, one or two years of studying, etc.)
- Bachelor of Science in power engineering (electrical or thermal) or related engineering fields with a mininum Grade Point Average (GPA) equivalent to 2,3 on a German scale. Equivalent qualifications (e.g. Fachhochschul Diploma) with a minimum grade of “good” will also be considered
- transcripts of records (list of subjects taken)
- professional experience or knowledge in power engineering if the Bachelor degree or equivalent is in another field of study
- a letter of motivation (your reasons for applying for PE and career perspectives)
- two letters of recommendation from professors or employers
- certificate of proficiency in English. Accepted are a TOEFL test with a minimum score of 213 points (computer-based) or 79 points internet-based; Cambridge Advanced English Test (min. grade B); Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency Test (min. grade B) or the IELTS (min. 6.5). Exempted from this regulation are only students whose mother tongue is English. If the language of teaching in your previous course of studies was English, you still have to provide certificate of proficiency in English (IELTS or TOEFL).

Documents certification
Please send only officially certified copies of your documents. We only accept certifications from the German embassy or other consular authorities, your former university, public notary or a Commissioner for Oaths. In case your documents are not in German or English, you need to provide certified English or German translations from a sworn interpreter.
Application Deadlines
The deadline for applications is the 1st of June each year. Note that application procedures take approximately 1-2 months. If you require a student visa , which can take up to 8 weeks, please ensure that you send your application as soon as possible and certainly no later than the 1st of June. Individual documents still missing by the 1st of June (e.g. Bachelor’s diploma) can be submitted until 15th of July.
Applicants from EU Countries can submit their applications till the 31st of August
All applications from international applicants have to be sent to our partner organisation Uni-Assist in Berlin for credential evaluation before BTU Cottbus makes a decision on your admission. Please be aware that a fee of 68€ will be charged by Uni-Assist for processing your documents.
