Welcome to the Chair of Intercultural Studies!

In the words of Alexander v. Humboldt, interculturality signifies the ability of people to grasp as much of the world as possible and then to link this understanding as closely as possible with the larger world. In today's globalised society characterised by technological development and economic interdependency, it is increasingly difficult to honour Humboldt’s postulate.

The field of Intercultural Studies relates to a world society, particularly as pertains to the question of achieving and maintaining transparency for the individual, as well as in broader societal and employment terms. In this sense, interculturality is at the heart of the interaction that takes place between technology, culture and society.

To fully understand interculturality, we first need to conceptualise culture as a whole, i.e. as a manifestation of the life expressions of a specific group of individuals within a given time and space. Culture is thus nurtured by the interaction of its different components. Cultural development is considered a dynamic process, a conduit that serves to link contemporary cultural phenomena with the past, and from which assumptions about future trends can be derived.
