Scientific Focus of the PhD Thesis

The PhD programme Environmental and Reseource Management is affiliated to the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Process Engineering. PhD students can hand in a research proposal related to any research topic at one of the faculty departments.

Research Profile of the Faculty

Main research topics of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Process Engineering are management of ground and water resources, biomass, climate change, ecosystem change, recultivation and restoration.

BTU Cottbus defined four basic themes of research: Materials, Energy, Environment as well as Information and communication. The Faculty is mainly involved in the basic themes Environment and Energy with the research areas "Regional change: Ecosysten genesis, landscape development and water mangagement" and "Sustainable management of materials and energy".

In the Energy theme the Faculty contributes with research on biomass as a renewable source of energy, potentials of resources for the generation of energy, reduction of emissions via exhaust gas cleaning and new combustion processes, and energy consumption.

A wide range of research topics are part of the Environment theme: clean-up of contaminated sites, biodiversity and nature protection, restoration of former minging sites, future land use and soil management, effects of climate change, modelling of eutrophication and resources of ground and drinking water.

Further research potentials of the faculty are bio-technology for refineries,  optimisation of processes and facilities to reduce energy and resouce consumption, landscape  management with mega-herbivors, environmental consequenses of the use of new materials and products, etc.
