The Faculty for Environmental Sciences and Process Engineering has vast research experiences in hydrological, geological and ecological restoration and development of destroyed and abandoned landscapes. Research was carried out in the destroyed landscapes in the Region around the city of Cottbus due to intensive open-cast mining.

Members of the facullty acquired significant scientific experitse by carrying out projects for reclamation and restoration of the post-mining landscape around Cottbus and ensured international recognition.
