Module Title: Safety- and Risk-Analysis for Process Plants
  Sicherheits- und Risikoanalyse für Prozessanlagen
Department: Faculty 4 - Environmental Sciences and Process Engineering
Responsible Staff Member:
  • Prof. Dr.-Ing. Witt, Werner
Language of Teaching: English
Duration: 1 semester
Frequency of Offer: Every summer semester
Credits: 6
Learning Outcome: Fundamentals and application of the following methods:
- hazard identification,
- evaluation of probability and consequence of failures,
- qualitative and quantitative risk assessment,
- safety related plant optimization (e.g. extension of inherent safety)
Contents: - hazard identification methods (e.g. Checklists, FMEA, HAZOP)
- probability evaluation methods (event tree, fault tree)
- consequence evaluation methods (e.g. one- and two phase flow (critical, sub-critical), dispersion of neutral and dense gas, fire, explosion and toxic hazards)
- qualitative and quantitative risk assessment methods (e.g. DOW F&E –Index),
- safety related plant optimization (especially extension of inherent safety)
- safety related plant optimization (e.g. design of pressure relief systems, process control systems, extension of inherent safety)
Exercise:
application of simulation tools (one- and two phase release, dispersion and neutral and dense gas, e.g. Aspen Dynamics, VDI)
realization of safety and risk studies (method, case study)
