SitesAll investigations of processes and structures are based on an artificial water catchment as the central and joint research object. As this site has been left to an undirected and undisturbed development an additional experimental site outside the catchment will be used for specific manipulations, destructive sampling strategies and replications of experimental approaches. The experimental plots are sited close-by and exhibit comparable initial site conditions. Further, the concept comprises specific sites for comparison. On the basis of these sites the occurrence and frequency of typical structures and processes in the initial development phase can be validated under different site conditions. In addition, comprehensive experiments under controlled conditions will be carried out in the laboratory and greenhouse, in micro- and mesocosms, as well as in soil lysimeters.
