Scientific Project Z1 - Monitoring and site management

Limnology

Staff

The limnological studies focus on the initial development of the pond which forms the lowermost hydrological compartment of the Chicken Creek catchment. The limnological development of the pond is documented with its physical, chemical and biological seasonal changes.

The limnological pond monitoring comprises the following investigations:
• continuous control of water temperature (at the point of greatest depth, depth profile);
• continuous control of oxygen concentration, electrical conductivity and pH (at 1 m depth by a multi-parameter probe);
• monthly sampling for the determination of physical, chemical and biological parameters including depth profiles of physical (temperature, electrical conductivity, oxygen concentration, turbidity, light attenuation), chemical (pH) and biological variables (fluorescence of phytoplankton).

The chemical analyses comprise the determination of the main anions and cations, the important nutrients for primary producers and different carbon fractions. The biological analyses include bacterioplankton, phytoplankton and zooplankton. Additionally, emersed and submersed macrophytes are controlled monthly with regard to species composition and coverage.
The resulting data are part of the central data management of the CRC/TR 38 and are available for all projects for further utilization.
