CREATIVITY -
THEORIES AND TECHNIQUES

The first part of this seminar will be devoted to psychological theories of creativity. In the second part different techniques for the enhancement of creativity under different circumstances will be explored practically.

  • „Creativity is any act, idea, or product that changes an existing domain, or that transforms an existing domain into a new one...What counts is whether the novelty he or she produces is accepted for inclusion in the domain." (Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi)

  •
  • „All who study creativity agree that for something to be creative, it is not enough for it to be novel: it must have value, or be appropriate to the cognitive demands of the situation." (Robert W. Weisberg)

  •
  • Among other things, you need to be able to generate new possibilities or new alternatives. Tests of creativity measure not only the number of alternatives that people can generate but the uniqueness of those alternatives. The ability to generate alternatives or to see things uniquely does not occur by chance; it is linked to other, more fundamental qualities of thinking, such as flexibility, tolerance of ambiguity or unpredictability, and the enjoyment of things heretofore unknown.“ (Robert E. Franken)

The Seminar will be completely held in English. Rudimentary knowledge of the language is totally o.k., as long as you show the will to express yourself.

Application is not necessary. The number of participants will be restricted to 15. If more than 15 people show up on the obligatory first date (15 October 02, 11.30 a.m.), lots will be drawn.

Course requirements:

  • Attendance of and active participation in both blocks
  • A verbal presentation (preferable with PowerPoint), usually in groups of two. Your talk should be no longer than 40 minutes, so that there is enough time for discussion and the answering of additional questions
  • A short written report along the lines of the presentation (ca. 10 pages)
